Leatha was the fourth of eleven children born to Alice Everett and Harvey Isaiah Sult. In 1930 she graduated from Wilkes-Barre Business College in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. She married Stanley Houck, and they had one son, Robert.
She was employed by the City of Wilkes-Barre, then by the E. E. Reilly Coal Mining construction firm in Wilkes-Barre as a bookkeeper. From 1953 until her retirement in 1975 she was employed by Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University, New York, as secretary to the chairman of the music department.
