Joyce M. Abel, age 74, of Shawnee, passed away Monday, September 5, 2011 in Oklahoma City. She was born November 1, 1936 to Ray Franklin and Billie Opal (Bourbonnais) Sullivan in Shawnee, OK. Joyce graduated from Bethel High School. She attended the School of Nursing at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City and graduated in 1956 as a Registered Nurse. She married Paul Abel on December 21, 1956 in Waynoka, OK. Joyce lived in Guymon and Pauls Valley before moving back to Shawnee in 1958, where she has since lived. She was the Assistant Director of Nursing at Shawnee City Hospital and later became Director of Nursing at Shawnee Mission Hill Memorial Hospital. Joyce worked at Blue Bell Industries (Wrangler) as the Head of Health Services, later going to work for Citizen Potawatomi Nation where she designed and directed their Health Services Clinic, CPN Wellness Center, Director of the Health AIDS Program, and was currently designing the Assisted Living Program. She has worked for CPN for the past 30 years. Joyce was proud of the fact that she delivered 96 babies during her career as a nurse. Joyce was preceded in death by her father.
