Celeste Sturgis ROCK HILL - Miss Celeste (Cessie) Ann Sturgis, 82, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, January 11, 2015. Miss Sturgis was a native of York County and a member of one of the oldest families in the community. She gave unselfishly of herself during her lifetime, never missing an opportunity to be of assistance to her neighbors and friends. Miss Sturgis was an avid gardener and spent many happy hours digging in the earth. She grew beautiful flowers and would quite often take fresh bouquets to those who needed some color and happiness in their day. She was well known in the community and while not always known specifically by name, it was not uncommon to hear the whispers of children saying "that's the bookmobile lady who comes to our school." Miss Sturgis attended Winthrop College (University) and retired from the York County Library where she entertained countless visitors with her incredible and entertaining storytelling talents. She was an accomplished artist who found beauty in everything around her and loved few things more than watching the birds that graced her yard finding the seeds and treats she left everywhere for them. She was quick to laugh, never failed to offer a helping hand and seldom met a stranger. Occasionally a person is put upon this earth that has a natural ability to spread happiness wherever they go. Miss Sturgis was just such a person. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her, loved her and who were lucky enough to be loved by her. Miss Sturgis was the third of six daughters born to the late Harry Victor Sturgis and Mary Moser Sturgis. She is survived by her sisters, Esther Sturgis Senn, of Union, S.C., Nancy Sturgis Philips of the home and Kathie Sturgis Robinson, of Laurel, Md. In addition to her sisters, she is also survived by her brothers in-law, Harry Zinker of Quinby, S.C. and Ray Robinson of Laurel, Md.; six nieces; five nephews; four great nieces and twelve great nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Harriett Sturgis Zinker and Jackie Sturgis Hoke, both of Quin-by, S.C. A memorial service will be 2 pm on Friday, January 16, 2015, at Greene Funeral Ho-me Northwest Chapel with Dr. Steve Hogg officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at Greene Funeral Ho-me Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill. Memorials may be made in Miss Sturgis' name to the York County Library, 138 E. Black Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730. Condolences may be made at www.greenefuneralhome.net.
