On Sunday, September 27, 2009, Vivian Jewell "Red" Allen, formerly of Indiana Avenue, took her final journey where she met the spirits of her loved ones.
The widow of Jesse J. Allen Sr., she was also preceded in death by her sons, Vincent "Steamboat" and Leo Allen; granddaughter, Benita Ewing; parents, Tom and Penona Stubblefield and sisters, Margaret Daily, June Smith and Eloise Cargile.
Red was born in Murray, Kentucky August 13, 1924, and as a young girl moved with the family to Toledo.
She was educated in the Toledo Public School System and was president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Hyatt Allen American Legion Post and an active member of her neighborhood block association.
For many years she was an employee of the Barber, Webb and Reimer families.
Red dedicated her life to the interests of her family and is survived by sons, Jesse J. (Doris) Jr. and Stephen and daughter, June (Edward) Butler; grandsons, Kenton Barnes and Edward Butler; granddaughters, Kym (Al) Taylor, Sonya (Alex) Carswell, DeElla McNeal, Tina Allen, Tiffany (Lonnie) Wyse, Stephanie and Stacie Butler; twenty-four great- grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Brother-in-law, Harry Allen; sisters-in-law, Ruth Penamon, Mimia and Ruby Allen; best friend, Fay Clark and many other relatives and friends also hold fond memories.
The family extends its gratitude to Parkcliffe Community at Wright-Harvey House with special thanks to Carol Georgeson, Connie Studyvin, Chris Mills and Shannon and to Gail Gable and Tami Rockwell of Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice.
Visitation is from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Dale-Riggs Funeral Home and wake services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. with funeral services to follow at noon at the Phillips Temple CME Church. Interment - Woodlawn Cemetery. Rev. Leon L. Troy Sr., Eulogist, Rev. Chester Ricks, Officiant.
