Graduated West Point immediately following the outbreak of the Philippine Insurrection in February 1899.
His commands included the Spanish-American War and the beginning of the Philippine campaign. He was stationed in Alaska, Texas, the Philippines, and Montana. He attended the school of the Line and the Staff College. Promoted to captain in Mexico with Funston and to colonel with Pershing in France and Belgium. He commanded both the 9th and the 148th regiments of Infantry in WW1 and was five times decorated. After the Armistice he commanded a brigade of the 37th Division and served both as Chief of Staff and Commander of the Division before its demobilization.

In 1908, in the Philippines, he married Florence, the daughter of famous Indian fighter and scout, Colonel J. M. T. Partello. Upon Colonel Stuart's retirement in 1939. The Stuarts established their home in Carmel California where he died in 1948.
