The Passing of Mrs. Colleen Strode Barnes
Coming as it did, perhaps the announcement of the death of Colleen Barnes on Thursday of last week caused such sincere and deep expressions of sympathy, and saddened the entire community, because she appeared to be so healthy and full of the joy of life. Only the night before she was stricken, she was at the home of her parents making ice cream and having a good time, and in such a short time was called to pass the great divide from which no one has ever returned. Colleen was a lovely character and her example in life is one that will live always.
Colleen Strode, only child and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Strode, was born August 1, 1908 on the John Rush farm north of Cherokee and passed away May 12, 1932 at the age of 23 years, 9 months and 11 days. The cause of her death was rheumatic fever.
She attended both city and Community High schools and was forced to quit on account of her illness in her junior year. She was a member of the M.E. Church in Monmouth, having moved her membership from Cherokee a short time ago. She was an active worker in all church activities and was one to be depended upon.
She was married to Paul Barnes on July 26, 1931 and this happy couple had an ideal home on the Westerfelt place 3 miles west and 2 1/2 miles south of Mineral. The neighbors often commented on how happy they were, and how well they got along.
Besides the young husband, and father and mother, she leaves to mourn her loss a host of relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon in the M.E. church in Cherokee conducted by Rev. A.L. Clardy of the Monmouth church, assisted by Rev. H.J. Sterling of Union Town, former pastor here.
The floral offerings were profuse and showed the esteem in which she was held in the hearts of loved ones and friends.
Interment was made in the Cherokee cemetery.
