Lydia Stricker Benzel of Ritzville, age 100, died Jan. 27, 2008. She was born Feb. 27, 1907 in Erlenbach, Russia, to David K. and Anna Baker Stricker. In 1909 Anna Baker Stricker died due to complications of childbirth. David married Marie Ziegler, a widow lving in Rosenberg, Russia. Lydia and her seven brothers and sisters move to Rosenberg , Russia, with their father and joined Mare and her five children there.
In 1911 David left his family in Rosenberg and journeyed to the U. S. in search of a better life. Lydia and the rest of his family joined him in Scottbluff Nebraska in 1912. Lydia spent most of her childhood in Scottsbluff, where she worked in the beet fields. In 1927 she met Fred Benzel, who was visiting relatives in Scottsbluff. They married shortly thereafter and Lydia moved to Fred's home in Ritzville, where she lived until her death. She was a devoted wife, mother and member of the Ritzville Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 1999.
She is surived by three sons and numerous grandchildren. (Names deleted for privacy)
