Crawford Strayer was among the outstanding men of Rockingham County as well as of Harrisonburg. He was a jovial man with many friends. He was a Democrat, but did not take an active part in political affairs. His wife was Juliet Lyle Smith Strayer, a woman of positive character and a gentle dispostion whom he wed on 25 October 1848 in Rockingham County. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee at Lexington, Virginia, and was for some time engaged in the practice of law at the Harrisonburg bar before engaging in banking. He was a man of fine business judgment, assisted in the organization of the First National Bank of Harrisonburg, and for many years was its cashier.
He was the son of Jacob Strayer Jr. and Adelaide Coffman.
