Page (Stratton) Barber, 86, formerly of Staunton, passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, in Danville.
Born Aug. 1, 1924, in Staunton, she was a daughter of the late Richard Haygood and Virginia (Mayo) Stratton, founding members of St. John's United Methodist Church, Staunton. Mrs. Barber was a charter member of St. John's.
After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School, she attended Richmond Polytechnic Institute and later received a master's degree in Education from Gallaudet University. Mrs. Barber was formerly employed with VSDB for two and a half years before moving to California where she taught the deaf for 28 years. During World War II, she joined the United States Navy and was honorably discharged at the rank of Yeoman Second Class V-10.
After retiring and returning to Staunton, she became a member of the Lee Hi Ladies. Mrs. Barber also worked with Literacy Volunteers for 15 years.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Nancy) Lassiter, of Martinsville and Mrs. (Robert) Sue Barrett Milford, of Fairhope, Ala. Also surviving are five nieces and nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was dearly loved by her family.
A graveside inurnment service will be conducted Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at 11 a.m. in Thornrose Cemetery, 1041 W. Beverley St., Staunton, VA 24401, with the Rev. Dr. Stephanie Sault officiating.
