Johan and his sister came to America to earn money. It was more advantageous to move to America where people could "own" their own land. He sent word to his parents telling them to leave the leased land in Germany and come to the "new" land for a better life. On January 11, 1839 father, Johan and mother, Maria Elizabeth took the rest of the family to United States aboard the "Charles Ferdinand" to New Orleans through Bremen, Germany.
After his parents and the remaining children arrived in America, they went to German settlement in Mud Creek Illinois, now called St. Libory. Eventually all members of the family would died of malaria except Johan H H.
In 1845 he married Mary Margaret Pollmann at St. Liborious Catholic Church. They would live on the family farm and have three children near. Mary died during a Cholera epidemic the summer of 1852.
In 1853, on April 28, Johan married a second time to Maria Elizabeth Stiens at St. Libory, Illinois. J. Herman and Mary would acquire 434 acres of farm land.
Johan Herman fathered 11 children: Mary, Bernard,Henry, then Conrad, John, Mary, Herman, Magdalena, Mary, Frank, Bernard.
Several were in professional photographers in Missouri, Michigan, Iowa and Illinois.
In 1871, Johan Herman Heinrich Strathman, died at age 59, left Mary and her family with the entire responsibility of the large farm.
