A tribute by Gordon and Beverly
She loved the ranch, cattle and outdoors. In the spring and summer, she was hard to find indoors except for cooking. She always took pride in cooking big meals. It was her tradition to deliver hot meals (usually beef stew or ham and beans) to the cowboys on cattle drives. Sometimes so hot we had to leave our gloves on. Don’t know how she did it, as many times she had to drive up to 30 miles to catch up to us. She was only late once and that was because of a snow drift.
Dad and she always had a big garden and in the fall found the cellar full of canned goods.
She always made time to go fishing. About the time the Beatles also came into existence. At that time. Mom, Veronica and Doris were doing a lot of ice fishing and nicknamed themselves the Three Beatles.
Being plagued by a kidney disease since a teenager, she finally had to face a dialysis machine in the spring of 1975. From then on it was three trips a week to the Lutheran Community Hospital in Norfolk for 4-5 hour treatments. Winter weather was always a worry that forced her to stay in Norfolk only a few times. In the summer every now and then, she insisted on driving herself down and back after the treatment. We always objected but she did it anyway, just to prove to herself and us that she was capable of doing it. The dialysis machine slowed her down a lot- an adjustment that was very hard for her to make. But she had to be busy and started making afghans and other numerous crochet projects. Made them she did- all of her relatives and friends and people in the Norfolk unit were supplied with her crafts and she even sold some.
About six months after the birth of her first grandson, she had to have a triple bypass surgery- the doctors gave her an 8 % chance of survival. Due to her determination and desire to watch her grandson grow, she made it through surgery. Six months later, she was Dawson’s extra special babysitter and never turned down an opportunity to be with him. Six weeks before her death she was blessed with another grandson, T .- talk about a proud grandma.
Thanks Mom for all the inspiration you gave all of us.
