Karrel Johnson of Wallowa died March 15, 2006 at a hospital in Laredo, Texas from a sudden illness while on vacation. She was 70.
Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 6, 1935 in La Grande, the only daughter of Ed and Edna Erickson Stowe. She grew up on Cricket Flat and attended school in Elgin, graduating from Elgin High School in 1953. She was queen of the Elgin Stampede, and an active in the annual Elgin rodeo. On Dec. 12, 1953 she married Wayne Johnson. They made their home in Wallowa and raised four children. She was a busy, supportive and tolerant mother, especially when her kids were all in high school at the same time. She was active with 4-H, International Order of Rainbow for Girls, Eastern Star and other civic organizations, as well as the Red Hat Society.
Mrs. Johnson worked outside the home as a partner in the Shell Mercantile Inc. She had worked with the Oregon State Forestry in Wallowa and the Wallowa Public Schools.
She was an artist and loved playing the piano. She loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing, playing with her horses and dogs, and riding ATVs. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren in Texas.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Wayne Johnson of Wallowa; mother Edna Flanery of La Grande; son and daughter-in-law Kerry and Darlene Johnson of Wallowa; son and daughter-in-law Karl and Guinevere Johnson of Bend; daughter and son-in-law Karin and Chris Nix of Hico, Texas; daughter Kristi Johnson of Umatilla; and grandchildren Sage and Sterling Nix of Hico, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her father Ed Stowe.
