Mary E. Stoops Avery Backus 90, of Carmel, died June 10, 2014. She was born November 10, 1923, the daughter of Zula E. (Price) Stoops and John W. Stoops. She graduated from Sheridan High School and Indiana Central Business College. Her employment included working for the FBI in California and legal work with her husband, Harris W. Avery, Attorney at Law. Mary loved writing poetry and was included in Who's Who of American Poets. She also loved dancing, traveling, crocheting, playing cards, listening to a wide range of music, and reading. Her first husband, Harris W. Avery, Sr., and her second husband, Tony Backus, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children, Susan Avery, Blanche Zelko (Jerry), and Harris W. Avery, Jr. (Rosemary); and four granddaughters, Jennifer, Heather, Mattia and Ruthie; as well as one great-granddaughter, Atlas. Memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Flanner and Buchanan-Carmel with calling 1 hour prior.
