CHICOPEE - Mary Rose Biela, 87, of Chicopee passed away on October 1st in her home, surrounded by her family. Born April 25, 1925 in Holyoke to the late Edward and Mary (O'Connor) Stone-Laroche, Mary was raised there with her brother, the late Robert F. Laroche. She was a 1942 honor roll graduate of Rosary High School, earned a nursing scholarship to Elms College, then went on to work at Wesson Memorial and Baystate hospitals until her retirement in 1987. Mary is predeceased by her first husband, the late Edward J. Drake, for whom the Holyoke Boys Club's Eddie Drake Memorial Basketball Tournament was named. They married before he left to serve in the Navy in WWII, and had two sons before he died in 1950. Mary married the late Julian M. Biela, also a Navy veteran, in 1953. Together, they had four sons, and the couple enjoyed raising their six boys at their Montgomery Street home. Mary spent her later years traveling and visiting her family. She loved to swim and was an active member of the YMCAs in Holyoke and San Diego. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Robert E. Drake and spouse, Roger Bulington of San Diego, CA; Thomas J. Drake and wife, Denise, of Chicopee; Mark A. Biela and wife, Diane, of Westfield; David J. Biela and wife, Faye, of McLean, VA; Craig C. Biela of Chicopee; and Allan S. Biela and wife, Charlotte, of Ocala, FL. Her laughter and indomitable spirit thrive today in her sons, nephew, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, daughters-in-law, Liza Drake of Brooklyn, NY, and Erin Bresnahan of Chicopee; her grandchildren, Patrick, Erik, Stephen and wife, Jennifer; Melissa, Katherine and husband, Brian; Shideh, Jennifer and hubsand, Justin; Matthew, Taylor Rose, Caroline, and Elizabeth; and her great-grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin, Katrina, Addison, and Avery. She will never be forgotten... Aloha 'Oe, Ma! A funeral home service will be held today, Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 12 pm at the Cierpial Memorial Funeral Home on 69 East St. in Chicopee Falls. Mary's burial will follow at 1 pm at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Calling hours are today from 10:30 to 12 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt.
