BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. ó Helen M. Stone Peters, age 96, passed from this life on Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Quaker Manor Nursing Home in Lowell, Kan.

Helen M. Stone was born Sept. 26, 1908 in Galena, Kan., the daughter of Oliver O. and Virrilla (Crunk) Stone.

She was a graduate of Galena High School. Mrs. Peters received her B.S. degree in music from Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kan., and her masterís degree in music from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

She taught school for 41 years; 16 in local schools and 25 years at Cordley Elementary School at Lawrence, Kan. She retired in 1974.

After retiring from teaching in Lawrence, she returned to Baxter Springs, where she was active in her church and civic organizations until her health began to fail.

She has been a member of the Friendship Rebekah Lodge in Lawrence, Kan. since 1926; a life member of NEA, KNEA and NRTA; a member of the Kappa Kappa Iota Teachers Sorority; and a member of the First Baptist Church in Baxter Springs, Kan., where she sang in the choir.

Helen M. Stone and T.M. (Dink) Peters were united in marriage in 1940. He preceded her in death in 1959.

She is survived by five step-grandchildren; and cousins, Cleta Stone Auman, of Riverton, Kan., and Susie Stone Bandy, of Joplin.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at the Galena City Cemetery.

Rev. Fred Craig will officiate.

Mrs. Peters has been cremated.

A memorial fund has been established for the music department of the First Baptist Church in Baxter Springs, Kan.

Helen died Saturday at Quaker Manor Nursing Home. She was 96 years old.
