Eugene Harold "Gene" Stone, 92, of North Manchester, Indiana died, at 1:35pm Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Timbercrest Senior Living Community in North Manchester. He was born November 14, 1916 in North Manchester to Paul D. and Hazel V. (Amber) Stone.

Gene married Elizabeth Flora in North Manchester on May 16, 1941. He was a 1934 Wabash High School graduate and a 1938 Manchester College graduate. Gene went to a year of Officer's Training School at Columbia University before going into the Navy in 1943. He was in the Navy until 1946, spending most of his time on a ship in the Pacific. He then attended Indiana University in Bloomington, earning his Master's degree. Gene taught business courses at Chester High School 5 years, was the principal at Central High School in North Manchester 12 years, and principal at Hagerstown High School 8 years. He then taught 13 additional years in Hagerstown before retiring in 1980. Gene was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren, the Indiana State Teachers Association, and the Indiana Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of North Manchester and Rotary Club of Hagerstown. Gene loved swimming, backpacking, and camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth F. Stone of North Manchester; 4 children, Steven F. (Jane) Stone of Lexington, Kentucky, Rebecca (John) Flory of St. Paul, Minnesota, Christine (Michael) Elliott of Saranac, Michigan, and Carolyn (Steve) Wieseke of Greens Fork, Indiana; 9 grandchildren, Galen P. Stone of Lexington, Matthew (Melissa) Flory of St. Paul, Jeffrey Flory of Washington D.C., Chad (Nicole) Elliott of Saranac, Brian Wieseke of Greens Fork, Hiedi (Eric) Dodson of Lexington, Suzanne Flory of St. Paul, Deni (Ryan) Sweeny of Enid, Oklahoma, Julie (Alfredo) Tobias of Centerville, Indiana; 5 great grandchildren, Lauren Dodson and Isaac Dodson, both of Lexington, Sofia Tobias of Centerville, Tyler Elliott and Addison Elliott, both of Saranac. 2 sisters, Miriam (Robert) Sparling of Wabash, Indiana and Barbara Wright of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his grandson Kevin Todd Wieseke, his brother Robert Stone, and his sisters Mary C. Noffsinger, Josephine Denney, and Barbara Schrank.

Memorial services will be held at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 N. East Street in North Manchester on Tuesday May 26, 2009 at 2pm with Pastor Kurt Borgmann officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Family will receive friends from 12-2pm Tuesday at Timbercrest Chapel.
