Waddington - Alexander Stone, 93, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans here, died Monday evening at the home of his son-in-law Herbert Hilard in Waddington village after a lengthy illness.
A native of Mill Roche, Ont. he came to this country and enrolled in the Union army in 1862 being assigned to the 1934d regiment under Captain Knapp. He received his honorable discharge Jan 18, 1866.
He was born June 2, 1843, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Stone and came to Waddington as a child. He was 19 when he enlisted in the Union Army.
His marriage to Ellen Mack of Waddington took place in 1872. He was noted as a fisherman in this section.
One son, Harvey Stone, and three sisters, Mrs. Samuel Newvine of Waddington, Mrs. William Crump of Madrid, and Mrs. Margaret Muldumre of Gouverneur survive.
Services will be at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Episcopal Church with Rev. Van Ess, rector, officiating.
