Albert "Bruce" Stone passed into eternal life on Monday, November 1, 2010. Bruce was born to Ab and Mattie Stone on December 2, 1931, in San Luis Obispo, Ca. At the age of two months he moved, with his parents and older brother Stan, to rural Kingsburg where he spent the next 78 years. Bruce graduated from Kingsburg Schools and attended Modesto Junior College. In 1950 he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Strand, and they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 28, 2010. Over the next 40 years they raised five children in "Stoneville" on Avenue 400. Bruce was an accomplished athlete and was the leading hitter on the baseball team. He was the quarterback on the school football team and never lost his love for the sport. For almost 50 years you could find him in his regular seat at the KHS bowl. He also participated In high school tennis but, rumor had it that was only because Shirley was on the team. He played short stop in the softball World Series in Chicago in 1954 and 1955. Bruce was a farmer at heart but had to have a day job to support his 'farming habit'. As a newlywed he sold sewing machines and for their first Christmas he presented his new bride with a brand new machine. Then he worked for North American Aviation in the electrical department. He was employed by PG&E for 32 years and retired in 1989. He loved to spend time in his RV at Pismo Beach, after retirement, and his vegetable garden was the envy of the neighborhood. When he wasn't in his garden you could find him tinkering in his playhouse, repairing revamping and restoring all the treasures he found on his weekly jaunts to garage sales, swap meets and the "Monday" sale. Dad will always be remembered for his love for his family. He had a strong work ethic which he passed on to all of his children and grandchildren. He loved his home on the farm and was able to spend his last days there with his family present. We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Bruce Trevino, for his competent and compassionate care of dad; to pastor Mark Reiff, for his visits and encouragement; to Stella, for the help she gave to dad and mom; and Optimal Hospice for their dedication to helping families spend quality time together, at home, as a loved one departs this world. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Ab and Mattie Stone; and his brother Stanley. Bruce is survived by his loving wife Shirley; his daughters, Jacqueline Johnson and her husband Mike, Susan Squaglia and her husband David, Julie Olson and her husband Gary; sons, Craig Stone and his wife Gloria, and David Stone and his wife Michelle; grandchildren, Mike Johnson and his wife Larisa, Ryan Johnson and his wife Alicia, Wendy Marquis and her husband Justin, Johneen Lear, Nick Squaglia, Kristen Squagra, Kelly Squaglia, Jeff Olson, Tracy Olson, Kristi Olson, Heather Stone, Kimmy Stone, Cassie Stone, Megan Stone, and Jenay Stone; and six great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Bruce's life was held at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1800 Sierra St. in Kingsburg on Saturday, November 6th. Interment was held at the Kingsburg Cemetery on Thursday, November 4th. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church, 1800 Sierra St. Kingsburg, Ca. 93631; or Optimal Hospice, 2439 W. Whitendale Ave, Suite B, Visalia, Ca. 93177.
