Clara McConnell Stone Steel, 93, of Pine Bluff, died April 21, 1998, at Trinity Village Infirmary.
She was born on February 11, 1905, at Sulphur City (Washington County), a daughter of the late John L. and Edmonia Elizabeth Curtis McConnell.
She was raised and received her early education in northwest Arkansas and graduated from Prairie Grove High School. She attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where she was a member of the Phi Mu
She and her first husband lived at Prairie Grove and later at Rogers. They moved to Helena in 1938 and to Pine Bluff in 1954. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a former member of the Administrative Board and a past president of the Altar Guild. She was a former trustee of the First Methodist Endowment Fund, an
honorary life member of United Methodist Women and a study goup leader for 15 years.
She was a former trustee for Arkansas Methodist Health Services and an American Red Cross Grey Lady volunteer at Jefferson Regional Medical Center for 10 years. She was a member of the Trinity Village Board of Trustees for seven
years and was a member of the Sesame Club.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne A. Stone, whom she married in 1927 at Fayetteville, and who died in 1984. He had been president and chairman of the board of Simmons Bank. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Dr. Marshall T. Steel, whom she married in 1985 at Pine Bluff, and who died in 1989. He was a retired president of Hendrix College.
Survivors include a son, Donald W. Stone of Jonesboro; a stepson, Dr. William E. Steel of Costa Mesa, California; a stepdaughter, Sarah Steel Hill of Dallas; four grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Charles Settle and Jay Culpepper officiating. Burial will be at 5 p.m. in Prairie Grove Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors.
The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church following the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Village, 6400 Trinity Drive, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71603; or to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8003, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71611.
