Birth: 1841
Death: Nov., 1901

Businessman who, in 1872, shot his associate, the infamous financier Jim Fisk. Fisk was Stokes's rival for the affections of Josephine Mansfield, the singer. Stokes spent four relatively comfortable years in Sing-Sing for the murder. Stokes was also an owner of the Hoffman House, an elegant hotel in Manhattan, where he hung his painting, Bouguereau's famous "Nymphs and Satyr." The painting shocked the Victorian public and attracted great crowds to the Hoffman House.
