Julia was the daughter of William and Abigail Stoddard of Connecticut. She married Conrad Clay on 9 October 1851 in Defiance County after the death of his first wife in 1849, and they had children: William Henry, Andrew Clay, Edward Obed, Byron Orlando, Nelson Alva, Estella Jane, Charles Franklin, Flora Belle, and Olive Marie.
