PORT HURON -- Marian C. Benedict, 91, who lived most of her life in Port Huron, died at the Medilodge of Yale, Inc. on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003 after a long illness.

She lived the past 11 years in Croswell in an adult foster care home.

Mrs. Benedict was born Sept. 11, 1912, the older daughter of Great Lakes Captain Roy Stockdale and his wife, Mary.

She was married in 1937 to Stanley Benedict, a longtime Port Huron attorney and former member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, who died in 1982.

Mrs. Benedict graduated from Port Huron High School, received an associate degree at Port Huron Junior College and a BA degree in English from the University of Michigan. She taught English and social studies for several years at Washington and Garfield schools and at Port Huron High School.

A lifetime member of Grace Episcopal Church, Mrs. Benedict was a member of the organ guild for over 25 years and devoted a great deal of time to supporting church activities. She believed in sharing her skills with her community and took an active role in several organizations.

As a member of the Port Huron Council of Girl Scouts, she was the leader of a Brownie Scout Troop and later a Senior Scout Troop for high school girls.

Mrs. Benedict was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Port Huron Musicale.

Mrs. Benedict enjoyed telling about her service with the Red Cross, both during World War II and after. She was a group leader of a canteen that met soldiers returning from the war as their trains passed through Port Huron. Although coffee, milk and doughnuts were provided, she said the young soldiers always chose milk because it had not been available to them for such a long time.

Survivors include her two daughters and their husbands, Martha Benedict and James Wallington of Perry and Sara and Richard Bennett of Melvin; grandsons, Daniel B. (Kathleen) Fitzgerald of Warren and Andrew M. Oliver of Port Huron; step-grandson, Timothy (Samantha) Bennett and children of Port Huron; and nieces, Carol (Michael) Codden of Villa Rica, GA and Marilyn Budde of Manton, and their families.

Mrs. Benedict was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Carson in 1998 and niece, Janet Wheeler in 1994.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Grace Episcopal Church, Goulden Memorial Chapel with The Rev. Robert P. Trask officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service in the parlor area at Grace Episcopal Church.

Memorial donations in Mrs. Benedict's name may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or the Alzheimer's Association.

Arrangements are by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St., Port Huron.
