Otteline Holden Stewart, the daughter of Levi Harrington Stewart and Louisa Emmeline Todd, was born Feb. 11, 1845 at East Wallingford, Vermont. She was the fifth of her parents' nine children. After her mother died in 1863, she went to live at Fort Ann, N.Y., with her sister Marietta, who had moved there when she had married.

John Quincy Ashley and Otteline Holden Stewart were married at Fort Ann on Jan. 11, 1866 by Rev. Alvin Robbins. John's sister Jane Ashley Mason and her husband Cyrus G. Mason served as witnesses. Otteline recorded the event in a copy of The Illustrated Polyglot Family Bible "presented to Mrs. Ottaline Ashley on Jan. 1st, 1872 by her brother-in-law George Ashley."

The newlyweds made their home at Fort Ann.... She became the mother of five children: Carrie Maud, born 1867, William Porter, born 1869, Frank Grant, born 1874, Emma Marie, born 1880, and Yula Evangeline, born 1888. Tragically, William Ashley died when he was six years old. On Oct. 13th, 1875, as he walked along a canal on the way to meet his father, he fell in the canal and drowned.

In March 1886, the family moved to Glens Falls.

Otteline Ashley continued to reside at Saratoga Springs, after the death of her husband, with her daughter Carrie, until Carrie died.

Otteline Ashley sold her home and deposited the proceeds in a bank, but lost everything when the bank failed during the Depression. She was living with her daughter Yula and son-in-law Paul Fasoli.

Otteline Ashley died from appendicitis on Feb. 15, 1933 at Brewster, New York. Three days later she was buried with her husband in the Bay Street Cemetery, Glens Falls.
