Mrs. Eleanor Ruth Stewart Patton, age 92 of Crockett, passed away March 19, 2010 in East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Patton was born March 25, 1917 to Hugh L. and Ruth Stiff Stewart of Brownwood. She attended the public schools of Waco, San Angelo and Brownwood, graduating from Brownwood High School in 1934 as salutatorian of her class. Mrs. Patton received her bachelor of science degree from Baylor University in Waco graduating in 1938 Magna Cum Laude with majors in Education and Spanish and minor in History. While in Baylor University, she served as president of Kappa Delta Pi and was also a member of the Sigma Delta Pi, an honorary fraternity for students of Spanish. Mrs. Patton received a master of education degree from Sam Houston State with a minor in history. After teaching in Falfurrias, Texas for one year, she accepted a position as Spanish teacher in Crockett High School where she taught for 29 years before retiring. In Crockett, she met and married Nat Patton, Jr., son of Congressman and Mrs. Nat Patton on August 9, 1940. One daughter, Martha Ruth Patsy Patton was born to the couple on February 21, 1942. Mrs. Patton was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for more than forty years and served on many church committees. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and The Builders Sunday School Class. Mrs. Patton was active in civic affairs and helped to organize Crockett's first Garden Club and also served as a docent and member of the Board of Directors for the Monroe Crook House. Mrs. Patton was a member of the Gamma Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Texas State Teachers Association as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution also TSTA, NEA and the Texas Educational Theater Association. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the two bridge clubs. Mrs. Patton traveled extensively and was able to visit all of the fifty states and sixteen foreign countries. Mrs. Patton was a wonderful wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to all.

Survivors include her daughter Patsy Patton, of Crockett; nieces Bonnie Weikel, of Colleyville and Jan Schroeder, of Plano; nephew James Patton, of Huntsville; niece Angela Patton Brizendine, of Huntsville; nephews Pat LeGory, of Va. and Ricky Smith, of Ore.; and cousin Garth King, of Tyler.

Preceded in death by her husband Nat Patton, Jr.; and sister Dorothy Jean Schroeder. Funeral Services for Mrs. Eleanor Ruth Stewart Patton were held Monday, March 22, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry House officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Monroe Crook House, P. O. Box 1251, Crockett, Texas 75835. Callaway-Allee Funeral Home
