College Football Coach. While attending Fairmont State College (West Virgina), he lettered three-times as a participant on their football squad and captained the team which clinched the WVIAC Championship Title in 1974. While attending there, he attained his masters degree in Health and Physical Education. He initiated his lengthy coaching career as an student assistant coach while at Fairmont, prior to moving onto the high school level. In 1977, he returned to the collegiate ranks serving stints with Salem College, the University of North Carolina, Marshall, William & Mary, North Carolina State, Arizona State and Air Force. It would be in the Canadian Football League where Stewart's coaching attributes became noticed, first with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. While serving as the offensive lines coach with the Montreal Alouettes, he played a significant part in providing protection for running back Mike Pringle who became the first player to break the 2,000 rushing yardage mark in 1998. In 2008, he was rewarded with the head coaching position at the University of West Virgina and one year later (2009), he guided Mountaineers to an appearance in the Gator Bowl. After leaving coaching in 2010, he moved onto ESPN for whom he served as an analyst. He died from a heart attack. (bio by: C.S.)
