Youngest of two sons of Henry Cushing Stevens and Helen Emily Shurtleff Stevens. Sixth great grandson of William Shurtleff and Susannah Lothrop.

Husband of Laura Rose LeClear, married on April 9, 1948 in Carmel, California, and father of three daughters.

John was an Electronics Engineer at KPIX on Van Ness for thirty years, Chief Engineer for Educational Television at UCSF from 1965 to retirement in 1980 when he was able to move from the San Francisco (the town he moved the most) to Sonoma where he became "Farmer John." John could fix almost anything and loved peanut butter toast for breakfast. He sold all his chickens so he could spend more time on his Commodore computer - how the PC would have thrilled him. Daddy died in an accident on his tractor on his beloved ranch, Stony Acres, Sonoma, CA, doing what he loved the most.
