Elizabeth "Betty" Ames, 87, of Farmington Falls, recently a resident of Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center, died on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

She was born on May 14, 1917, in Jamaica Plain, Mass., daughter of George and Bertha (Twitchell) Stetson.

She grew up in Wells and graduated from Wells High School. On Nov. 27, 1940, she married Theodore (Ted) Ames in New Sharon. They were married for 63 years until his death in 2003. In addition to homemaking and raising her family, Mrs. Ames worked at the Farmington Motel for a number of years and then at the Farmington Home for the Aged. She was a correspondent for the Franklin Journal for more than 50 years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, traveling and gardening. She was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Farmington Falls for more than 60 years, serving as treasurer for many of those years. She also was a longtime member of the Wakefield Philathea Class, serving as treasurer and secretary, and was a past member of Hiawatha Grange, Pomona and State Grange.

She is survived by her sons, George W. and his wife, Pearl, of Winthrop, and Edward T. and his wife, Gerry, of Wilton; daughters Ina Louise Ames and Helen C. and her husband, Stanley, of Kennesaw, Ga.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley M. Buzzell.

Family and friends are invited to call 3-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service & Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in her memory to the Painting Fund for the Union Baptist Church, c/o the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring.
