AGENCY -- Ennis C. (Yampy) Sterner, 83, died Monday at 11:30 p.m. at Sunnyslope Extended Care Center in Ottumwa, where he had been four years. He was a well known figure for nearly 60 years at the Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Reunion of Mount Pleasant, of which he was a former president of the Iowa Brotherhood of Threshermen. He was born June 20, 1889, in Wapello County, to Ezra and Winnie Rayl Sterner, and spent most of his life in the Agency and Batavia communities.
During World War 1, he organized and directed the Agency Community Band and later organized the Farmers Union Iowa State Band, which played for state and national gatherings and had radio programs. He was in charge of the Ottumwa Naval Air Station blacksmith shop during World War II. In 1968, he was honorary public relations chairman of the Batavia Homecoming centennial celebration.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Marie Lawson of Granada Hills, Calif.; one son, Everett of Bakersfield Calif.; and one sister, Miss Grace Sterner of Agency. He was preceded in death by two brothers and an infant sister. The service will be Thursday, 1:30 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Eldon, conducted by the Rev. Kermit Black. Burial will be in the Agency Cemetery.
