John L. Sterner, 88, of Port Carbon, passed away Sunday with his daughter, Susan, by his side at ManorCare Health Services, Pottsville. Born in Schuylkill Haven, May 20, 1924, he was a son of the late Elmer and Emma Bernet Sterner.

He attended Schuylkill Haven High School. He served in the Navy as a seaman second class USNI SA in World War II. He worked as a truck driver for Pottsville Bleach and Dye, Port Carbon, for 39 years until retiring in 1988. He was a member of the St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, Port Carbon. He was a member of Port Carbon American Legion Post 371 and Black Diamond Navy Club Ship 257, Minersville. He was a life member of Goodwill Fire Company, Port Carbon, and Rainbow Hose Company, Schuylkill Haven. He was an avid golfer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John L. Sterner Jr.; and two brothers, Robert and Elmer Sterner.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret E. Weldon Sterner, Port Carbon; a daughter, Carol A. Haslam, Port Carbon; sons, Edward M. Sterner and his wife, Linda, Pottsville, and William D. Sterner, Port Carbon; a daughter, Susan M. Sterner, Pottsville; six grandchildren, Michael, Crystal, William, Edward, Steven and Jennifer; seven great-grandchildren, Michael, Camron, Christopher, Nathan, Aaliyah, Logan and Gabriel; sister, Christine Sheriff, Pottsville; nieces and nephews.
