Fern Barnhardt, 66, Bismarck, died Aug. 4, 2011, at her home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. William Ruelle as celebrant and the Rev. Jerry Kautzman concelebrating. Burial will be at the Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish rosary/vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.
Fern was born April 13, 1945, to Gottlieb and Stella (Weigum) Stern in Beulah. She was raised on the family farm north of Golden Valley. She went to a rural school until the eighth-grade, then later graduated from Beulah High School in 1962. After graduation, she moved to Bismarck and went to work as a dental assistant. She met Archie Barnhardt and they were married Jan. 11, 1964. They had two sons, Allen and Brian, they moved to Mandan, 1977 where she worked for Medcenter One. She injured her back in 1992 which caused her to retire. Fern enjoyed baking bars and cookies for her family and friends. She also enjoyed working in her flower gardens, traveling to the west coast, the mountains, going to the casinos last winter and collecting angels. Her and Archie spent last January in Arizona.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Archie; her two sons, Allen and Brian, both of Mandan; three grandchildren, whom she loved very much, Nicole, Brandon and Stormy, all of Bismarck; three sisters, Sonja Laughlin, Gillette, Wyo., June (Doug) Stiles, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Connie (Jeff) Gegelman, Golden Valley; brother, Dean, Mandan; two sisters-in-law, Delores Lang (Dave Wetsch), Mandan, and Sandy (Al) Dick, Arizona; two brothers-in-law, Jerry (Mary) Barnhardt and Darrel (Katy) Barnhardt, all of Salem, Ore.; and dear friends, George and Phyllis Kautzman, Mandan; along with many nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her little sister, Luzina; father and mother-in-law, Jack and Katherine Barnhardt; brother-in-law, Robert Laughlin; and sister-in-law, Marcella Erhardt.
