DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER
On Wednesday evening at 8:30, W. M. Sterling, Esq., passed awaay, death being caused by a complication of diseases, from which he had suffered for several years but which did not reach an acute stage until about two months ago, since which time he has been confined to his home and all that medical skill could do was done without avail.
Deceased was born on June 28th, 1840 at West Gains, Orleans Co., N. Y., and when the war broke out he enlisted in 28th Reg. N. Y. State Volunteers, First Brigade, First Div. Twelfth Corps Army of the Potomac, and served until June 2nd, 1863, leaving the service a Lieutenant.
On Feb. 22, 1865, at Eagle Harbor, N. Y., he was married to Miss Mary R. Parker who with six children, Byron, Starr, William, Charles, Clara, and Eka, are left to mourn his loss; all but Byron living here, and he has been in constant attendance on his father since serious symptoms appeared.
During his residence here, since 1869, he was Post Master for one term and has filled the office of Justice of the Peace for several years and which he held at the time of his death. He was well known throughout this section of the state for his prominence in politics and G. A. R. circles and his ability as a pension attorney.
The funeral will e held at 2 o'clock today under the direction of Maynard Post No. 49, of which deceased has been chosen Adjutant for several successive terms, and without doubt will be largely attended by members of surrounding Posts.
