DONNA R. STERLING (Age 65)

Beloved wife for 44 years to David, mother of two, grandmother of two, and a highly respected scientist and Virginia educator, passed away peacefully at home on June 24, 2014, from pancreatic cancer. In addition to supporting her husband's distinguished Air Force career and rearing her family, Mrs Sterling accomplished a 20 year illustrious career at George Mason University as a professor of science education and center director. She was designated a Distinguished Service Professor in 2013, one of only eight to hold that title. Her leadership in the educational process helped increase the abilities and skills of science teachers throughout Virginia under the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement, leading a five university team under a $28 million five year grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Her accomplishments were recently honored by the University, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the President of the United States. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 10 a.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 1125 Savile Lane, McLean VA 22101. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, August 21 at 11 a.m. Please gather at the Administration Building no later than 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Sterling Endowed Excellence Fund at George Mason University.
