Ruth Elizabeth Kosmatka, age 89 of Valparaiso, formerly of Chesterton, died Saturday, January 28, 2012.

Ruth was born on April 10, 1922, the fifth of six children born to Theodore and Mabel Anderson Stephens, a lifelong resident of Waverly.

Ruth married Sylvester (Sally) Kosmatka in 1946 in Chesterton where they made their home for 41 years raising four children, who survive her: Joanne (Charles) Unbehaun of Plano, Texas, John (Carol) Kosmatka of Valparaiso, Thomas (Marilyn) Kosmatka of Valparaiso and Ruth (Larry) Norlington of Valparaiso.

Ruth is also survived by a sister Lois Hellman of Michigan, nine grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Her husband Sally preceded her in death on July 4, 1987. Her son Tom also preceded her in death on September 14, 1994. Brothers Kenneth and Robert Stephens, sisters Jeanette Meyers and Marion Schultz also preceded her.

Ruth faithfully attended St. Patrick Catholic Church. She worked many years at the Chesterton License Bureau and was past president of the Westchester Senior Citizens Group. Ruth enjoyed crocheting, crafts and was an avid flower gardener. She was a people person. She attended Waverly School, a one-room schoolhouse. Ruth was a 1940 graduate of Chesterton High School.

She was a loving wife, mother grandmother and great grandmother.

The family greatly appreciates the compassion and love of the VNA Hospice Center, Dr. Weiss and St. Agnes Day Care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet, Chesterton, on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Father James Meade officiating. Burial will be in the Chesterton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 South 2nd St., Chesterton, with a Rosary at 7:30.

Memorials may be given to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
