Nick Ehlen - Fatal Tragedy in Porter County

Details of a family quarrel come to us to-day from near Hagerman*, in the north part of the county, which resulted in the death of a man by the hand of his step-son.

Nick Ehlen and his step-children, whose mother is dead, have been having trouble concerning the division of the family's property, which was left by former parents, and they have been lawing about the same.

Mr. Ehlen and his oldest step-son, Charles Stevens*, were here in court all day Tuesday and got home late that night. Another step-son, John Stevens*, principal witness at the inquest, testified that shortly after his step-father and brother returned, he, being up stairs, heard a struggle below mingled with cries for help and, with his sister, hastened to the scene of distress, where they found their brother on the floor, with the step-father holding down and choking him. The young man was released from the old man's grasp, when the latter left the house threatening to soon return with a revolver to shoot Charles, who, upon hearing the threat and hearing his late assailant calling to a neighbor to loan him a revolver, got one himself and shot Mr. Ehlen dead. The homicide is here in jail.

The above facts we learned from a juror of the inquest trial.
