Dorothy Ann "Dot" Sten, 80, of Washington, died unexpectedly Thursday, November 26, 2009, in Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living Facility, South Strabane.

She was born January 22, 1929, at home in Washington, a daughter of the late John Edwin and Anne Johannson Sten.

Ms. Sten was a 1947 graduate of Trinity High School. She went on to receive her bachelor's degree in home economics from Pennsylvania State University in 1951 and her master's degree in education in 1962 from the University of Pittsburgh.

She was a home economics teacher at Trinity High School for 38 years, retiring in 1984.

Ms. Sten was an active member of First Lutheran Church, Washington. She was a lifelong member of the Swedish-American Organization, Balder Lodge, where she most recently held the office of treasurer.

She loved to be with her friends and family and enjoyed traveling, reading, cats and Penn State football.

Surviving are a brother, John B. (Gertie) Sten of Washington; a sister, Edith Gillmor of King George, Va.; four nephews, Gary (Lisa) Gillmor, Bruce (Lisa) Sten, Alan (Lucy) Sten and Paul (Debbie) Sten; two nieces, Donna (Scott) Black and Khristy Lynn; three great-nephews, Wyatt and Edwin Sten and Joshua Black; and three great-nieces, Abigail Sten, Casey Gillmor and Hannah Black.

Deceased are a niece, Linda Gillmor; a brother-in-law, Warren Gillmor; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Sten.

Friends will be received from noon to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Piatt and Barnhill Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 30, with the Rev. Kenneth R. Schott officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to First Lutheran Church, North Franklin and West Walnut streets, Washington, PA 15301, or a charity of one's choice. Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Directors Inc., Charles R. Piatt, owner/supervisor, and Lawrence K. Donovan, director.
