was born to Arthur and Emma (Schmuck) Stelling on December 18, 1918 on the family farm near Luverne, Minnesota. After her father died when she was six years old, she moved with her mother to Luverne where she attended school. When she was nine years old, her mother married Hugo Falk and they all lived on a farm in Spring Water Township south of Jasper, Minnesota. They later moved to a farm northwest of Garretson, South Dakota where Heolah attended high school. After her graduation from Garretson High School in 1936, she attended Eastern State Normal School in Madison, South Dakota. Upon completion of her education, she taught rural schools in Rock County, Minnesota from 1938 to 1945.
On July 1, 1945, Heolah was united in marriage to Perry Benson in Garretson. Following their marriage, they moved to Jasper where she worked as a substitute teacher. During these years, she also helped her husband who owned and operated Benson Radio and Television until their retirement in 1976. Since retiring, they have enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They have also traveled to Egypt for a month and to the European and Scandinavian Countries.
Heolah and Perry moved to Minneapolis in 2001 to be closer to some of their family. After Perry's death she moved with her son and daughter-in-law to Libby, MT. Heolah died peacefully on November 27, 2010, at the Libby Care Center in Libby, Montana.
Heolah was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne on January 5, 1919, and she was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson on May 10, 1934. She was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper where she was active in the Ladies Aid and Altar Guild and taught Sunday School for about 25 years. She enjoyed needlework, hardanger, quilting, and bridge playing.
She is lovingly remembered by her two sons, Bruce Benson and his wife Cheryl of Fairview, Montana, and Steven Benson and his wife Barbara of Minneapolis, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Randahl Benson and his wife Elizabeth, Viki Soulia and her husband Paul, Allen Benson and Dennell Benson; three great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Delores Falk of Jasper, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother, Roger Falk.
