Phyllis Miller Hyde, 73, of Amarillo died Wednesday, March 14, 2007.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Llano Cemetery with Dr. Stanley I. Adelman and Harriette Tallert of Temple B'Nai Israel officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Mrs. Hyde was born March 6, 1934, in New York City to Benjamin and Rebecca Steinberg. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor of arts in psychology (with honors) in 1981. She was a resident of New York City until 1987, when she and her husband, Scott Hyde, relocated to Amarillo after she had suffered a severe stroke in 1985 that made big city life difficult.

She held administrative positions at State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Kings County Hospital Department of Psychiatry; and The Rockefeller University, a graduate-level medical research center in New York City from 1972 to 1987.

Mrs. Hyde was a talented writer and worked on several special projects in the late 1980s and early 1990s with Gerald Kelly, then chaplain at Harrington Cancer Center, including a special report on Chaplain Kelly for the Globe-News, and a guest editorial on non-handicapped drivers who park in designated handicapped parking spaces.

Beginning in 1988, she was a member, and then president, of the Amarillo Stroke Survivors Club until about 2002. Helping other stroke survivors was a commitment she made after receiving what she considered inadequate support for her stroke recovery.

Survivors include her husband and three children from a previous marriage; a son, Steven Miller, lawyer, of St. Louis; a son, Michael Miller, a psychiatrist of San Antonio; and a daughter, Ellen Miller of New York City; and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Temple B'Nai Israel, 4316 Albert Ave., Amarillo, TX 79106.
