Born in France, Mary Anna came to the U.S. as a young girl, her family settling in Hermann, MO. She married Henry Stein in Hermann, MO, and 4-5 years later they moved to White Church, MO. Henry and Mary Anna had six children, five surviving to adulthood. Their children were Anna Mary, Louisa Otilla, Henry J., Alice C., Verona Alvina, and Ernestina Klara.
In her application for a Civil War widow's pension, she made the following statement: "My name: I have been known by the name Anna for all of my life, and it also appears on my pension certificate. My baptismal or full name is Mary Anna..."
