Esther L. Ashby, age 83, of Kirksville, Missouri died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at the Northeast Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri. The daughter of Alfred and Minnie (Arnold) Steen, she was born June 24, 1921, in Worthington, Missouri.

She was married to Thomas Clive Ashby on December 23, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri, who preceded her in death on February 5, 1992.

Surviving are their three children, Michael L. Ashby and his wife, Linda, of Blue Springs, Missouri, Marilyn R. Kimble and her husband, Bert of Jefferson, Missouri and Richard A. Ashby and wife, Ann, of Geneva, Illinois; six greatchildren, Todd Ashby, of Kansas City, Missouri, David Ashby of Springfield, Missouri, Kori Kimble Anderson and Scott Kimble, both of Springfield, Missouri, and Cole and Ross Ashby of Geneva, Illinois; a great-granddaughter, Elise (Ellie) Anderson of Springfield, Missouri; one sister and husband, Mildred and Dick Campion of North Liberty, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Okylle Steen of Princeton, Iowa and Carol Jones of Kirksville, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Steen and sisters, Edith Cross, Ruth Hunt, Lois Gardner, Gracie Steen, and Ruby Steen.

Mrs. Ashby was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Senior Circle, and was known for her flower gardens and love gardening.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 a.m. Saturday January 1, 2005 at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Chapel in Kirksville, Missouri, with Reverend Don Noble, officiating. Musical selections will be "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace" and "Old Rugged Cross," provided by Cheryl Newland, organist.

Burial will be in the Queen City Cemetery, Queen City, Missouri. Pallbearers will be Bob Behnen, Mark Van Dolah, Steve Collins, Brad Embry, Rob Bowen, and Erik Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Bowen, Leonard Bowen, Doug Steen, Don Steen, Perry Collins, Gary Collins and Marshall Collins.

Visitation will be Friday December 31, 2004 with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, Kirksville, Missouri.
