Virginia M. Steele was born April 8, 1923 to Grady and Eunice (Miller) Steele in Aurora County. She attended Pleasant Lake School for nine years and in 1941 graduated from Stickney High School. After graduation, Virginia attended Mitchell Business College for a short time before the call came to be clerk in the War Rationing Office in Aurora County. She later became the Chief Clerk in Jerauld County at Wessington Springs, SD.On April 18, 1946, Virginia was united in marriage to James (Bill) Nelsen when he returned from the war. They lived in Mitchell for two years and during that time the first child, Lynda, was born. They moved to Chamberlain in 1947. Her husband worked doing electrical contracting until 1958 when they purchased the Chamberlain Coast to Coast Hardware Store. They later sold it to Chad and Shirley Kopke and built the KOA Campground. In November of 1976, Jim passed away and Virginia managed the campground for a year before selling it to the Gilberts in 1978.Virginia was united in marriage to William Hobson of Tucson, AZ in 1979. They spent their summers in Chamberlain and the winters in Arizona. William passed away in 1993 and in 2001, Virginia moved back to Chamberlain.Virginia volunteered at the Tucson and Chamberlain hospitals. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain, the Ladies Fellowship, and also taught Sunday School. She was Cub Scout Den Mother, a member of the Tucson AZ Senior Entertainment Dance Group, and Red Hat's Society.Virginia passed away on October 9, 2014 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 91 years. Preceding her in death were her parents; her son Larry; both husbands James Nelsen and William Hobson; brother Marvin Steele; and three sisters Velma Gilbert, Mildred Hurni and Myrna Steele.
