Rufus James Starling, 80, of Crystal River, Fla., passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. He was born Dec. 18, 1932, in Abbeville, Ala., to John Henry and Emma Mae (Whatley) Starling. He came here 35 years ago from Lutz. He was a retired crane operator and a member of Operating Engineer's Local Union #925 of Tampa. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially gardening.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, "Sonny" Starling; two brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Betty Ruth Starling of Crystal River; a son, Joe Anthony Crain (Angela) of Inglis; three daughters, Jean Larson and Angela Hartley both of Lutz and Lisa Crain of Sanford, N.C.; a sister, Alice Faye Morrison (Rudolph) of Abbeville, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Crystal River with Pastor Taylor Robertson officiating.
