Donivan L. Stanford was born in Portland, and graduated from Grant High School in 1942. He attended the University of Oregon until World War II interrupted his education. His three years of service included training recruits at Fort Knox to drive tanks and liberating Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, with the 16th Armored Division. After the war, Don returned to college where he began lasting friendships in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, earned a business degree, and met his future wife, Jean Duyck of Forest Grove. Jean and Don married in 1951, settled in Portland, and raised four children. Don worked as a certified public accountant for several accounting firms and private companies before founding his own practice, Stanford and Cornell in 1980, with Sandy Cornell. He enjoyed accounting, particularly building friendships with his clients. This led to a lifelong reluctance to completely retire! He was a jazz lover and played the trumpet. Don also enjoyed camping, hiking, golfing, and water sports but he said these activities were only "preseason training" for his greatest passion: skiing. Family vacations were spent in pursuit of the perfect slope. Don will be remembered for his friendly nature, easy smile, and sense of humor. Don was preceded in death by his son, Cary. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean; children Craig, Mark, and Cathy (David Bakeman); and seven grandchildren. A memorial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, in the West Hills Unitarian Fellowship, 8470 S.W. Oleson Road, Portland. Remembrances may be made to KMHD Jazz Radio.
