Mertila was the daughter of Hadley C. Standish and Sarah Elizabeth Roloson. She was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. She had a younger brother John Carpenter Standish. Mertila died around the age of 26-28 between 1883-1885.

Mertila was possibly married to Albert D. or B. Smith and living in Cleveland, Ohio in 1880 with him. They are living with George and Alice Smith and their children. Albert is a post trader born in Ohio in about 1850. His father was born in New Jersey. It is my belief that they had no surviving children from their marriage. It's possible Mertie's death was related to child birth, but that is speculation.

1860 Dundee, NY census with father and mother recorded as M.R. Standish. 1870 Starkey, NY census with mother and brother. (Not with family in 1880 census, possibly married to Albert Smith in Cleveland, Ohio)
