Mary F. Devlin (Lonaconing)

LONACONING Mary Frances Devlin, 83, of Lonaconing, passed away after a short illness on Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at her home with family members by her side.

Born Feb. 25, 1923, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Peter F. and Bertha (O'Neill) Stakem.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. Devlin Sr.; a brother, John J. (Jack) Stakem; and a sister, Helen (Nellie) Richards.

"Fran" was a lifelong member of St. Mary's of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Lonaconing, where she was a member of the Sodality. She devoted many hours to her church over the years assisting as a dinner worker and money counter. After graduating from Central High School in 1940, she attended Catherman's Business School in Cumberland and worked at Westvaco several years before giving up her position to raise her family.

She is survived by five daughters, Mary Frances Stefanski and husband Joseph, Cockeysville, Regina Stefanski and husband Francis, Lutherville, Maureen Stefanski and husband Raymond, Dundalk, Carmel Goodwin and husband Joe, Frostburg, and Katherine Turnbull and husband David, Cumberland; and two sons, Thomas P. Devlin Jr. and wife Sue, Elkridge, and Michael Devlin and wife Diane, Frederick. She was also affectionately called "Nanny" by her 17 grandchildren, Francis, Pamela, Matthew, Susan, Julie, Karen, Joseph, Mary and Sarah Stefanski, J. T. and John Goodwin, Rebecca, Michelle, Victoria and Laura Devlin, and Marie and Ashley Turnbull. Fran also has one surviving sister, Leah Sheeley, Port Charlotte, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Bernadette Brown and Stella Devlin, Lonaconing; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., 8 E. Main St., Lonaconing, (eichhorn-mckenziefh.com) on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Tuesday by Sr. Marietta Culhane, O.S.F.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Patrick Besel and Father James Hannon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lonaconing on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at 10 a.m.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 16102 St. Mary's Church Terrace, Lonaconing, MD. Memorial cards are available at the funeral home.
