She was the daughter of the late Walter and Alee Finley Stacey and was born in Montgomery, Ala., Jan. 29, 1906, on the family farm, where her father raised cotton and raced horses.
Sarah was married to Joseph Barrentine after he returned from World War I. He worked for the Florida East Coast Railroad, where he was instrumental in building the railroad system in and around Miami, as well as the overseas railroad into Key West. She graduated from the Exclusive Alabama School for Girls and later received her nursing degree from the University of Alabama. Sarah was employed as a nurse all her life and owned a small nursing home in her younger years.
After her husband's death, she managed to raise her three children and lived on her own well into her 90s in Dothan, Ala., before moving to Hornell seven years ago to be closer to her daughter.
She loved to travel, going from the California coast to Florida and New York spending time with her extended family. Sarah enjoyed doing hand work and received great pleasure sharing items she made with others. She will be remembered for her green thumb and the beautiful gardens and flowers that she grew.
