Charles Staab Jr., 85, Hays, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born May 8, 1927, in Catharine to Charles and Rosa (Koerner) Staab.

He married Marcella Burgardt on Nov. 13, 1950. She preceded him in death in 2005. He was former owner of Glassman-Staab Plumbing and Heating, worked in maintenance for DSNWK and helped at the American Legion in Hays. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from July 1945 to December 1946.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1325, Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, of which he was past commander.

He was awarded as a Point of Light at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, was chairman of the Ellis County Veterans Memorial Committee, was helpful in bringing the Moving Wall to Hays two different times, and was awarded from the city of Hays as Citizen of the Year.

Survivors include four sons, Charles Victor and wife, Barb, Federal Way, Wash., Ronald and wife, Wanda, Victoria, Douglas and wife, Pamela, Lawrence, and Conrad and wife, Sonya, Russell; six sisters, Frieda Dinges, Tillie Leiker, Joey Dreiling, Rose Doerfler, Geri Dreiling and Mary Staab; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Rudy, Eddie and Alfred Staab; and a sister, Flora Doerfler.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, with military honors by the American Legion.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine.

The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

There will be a combined third and fourth degree rosary at 6:30 p.m., followed by a vigil at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, Hospice of Hays Medical Center or to DSNWK in care of the funeral home.
