John was born in Bridport, Dorsetshire to John Squire, Sr. and Edith Hounsell. He married Matilda in 1839. He and his father were shoemakers by profession. He, Matilda and their then small family traveled to the U.S. in 1850 and settled in Van Buren County, Iowa. Eventually, he took up farming. He retired many years later and moved to Eldon, returning shoemaking. He and Matilda had five children, two girls and three boys.
