Kathy Spurling, 40, was in the intensive-care unit at Providence Hospital in Everett, where she was taken after an accident on the shores of Puget Sound last night.

Her husband told police he and his wife were sunbathing in the Edgewater Park area of Everett when the tide came in about 6 p.m., surrounding them. As the couple tried to swim back to shore, a wave threw Kathy against a rock, knocking her unconscious, and she was carried farther out into the water.

A Poulsbo family who were fishing nearby on the Everett-Mukilteo border, pulled her into their boat and administered CPR until the boat reached the McConnell Boathouse, several hundred yards away. Mukilteo paramedics responded, continuing CPR as they rushed her to the hospital.
