Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sports Burch, 93, went home to meet her savior on August 30, 2014 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross following a short illness.
She was born January 9, 1921 in Wayne County, GA to Marcus Lafayette Sports and Estella Ogden Sports and the 3rd eldest of eight children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Samuel Jones Burch, Sr.; three brothers, Harry Sports (wife Amanda) and J.E. Sports (wife Gertrude), and Robert Sports (wife Dorothy); two sisters, Joann Sports Mobley and Ernestine Sports Davis (husband James); two brothers-in-law, Gene McCormick and Tom Taylor; and a niece, Cathy Sports.
Mrs. Burch was associated with the Chamber of Commerce in Chattanooga, TN in the 1950's and Burch Brothers Gym of Waycross in the 1970's. She was a longtime member of Memorial Baptist Church of Waycross and received her education from the Waycross School System. She was considered a kind woman of virtue.
She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Burch Callahan of Waycross; two sons, Samuel J. Burch, Jr. (wife Ginger) and Robert "Bob" Burch (wife Lynn) of Blue Ridge, GA; seven grandchildren, Craig Callahan of Coral Springs, FL, Christia Callahan of Waycross, Caryn Callahan Johns (husband Robert) of Waycross, Lauren Burch of Atlanta, GA, Benjamin Burch of Fort Bragg, NC, Joseph Burch of Athens, GA, and Elizabeth Burch of Gainesville, GA; two sisters, Virginia Sports Taylor of Fernandina Beach, FL and Imogene Sports Hodges of Birmingham, AL; a brother-in-law, Buddy Mobley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday (September 1, 2014) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
