He was the son of Philip & Elizabeth (Winslow) Spooner. At the age of seventeen, he became a soldier in the company of his uncle, Capt. Wing Spooner. Clapp obtained the rank of Captain in the State Militia.
Clapp was a farmer; he inherited and lived on his grandfather Deacon Daniel Spooner's farm in Petersham. He was often called upon to serve in municipal offices.
Clapp and Mary Church married July 24, 1783. They had eleven children.
